How can I improve my oral hygiene at home?
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, use an antibacterial mouthwash, and visit the dentist regularly.
Are electric toothbrushes better than manual ones?
Electric toothbrushes can reduce plaque and gingivitis more effectively when used properly.
What causes tooth sensitivity?
Sensitivity can result from enamel wear, receding gums, tooth decay, or exposed dentin. A dental evaluation can help determine the cause.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Common signs include bleeding gums, bad breath, gum recession, swelling, and loose teeth.
What are dental sealants and does my child need them?
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to help prevent cavities. They’re especially helpful for children and teens and are quick and painless to apply.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes. We use digital X-rays, which emit very low levels of radiation. They are safe for both children and adults and are an important tool for detecting dental issues early.
What Do the Numbers Mean During My Dental Exam?
When we measure your gums, you’ll hear numbers called out—these are pocket depths in millimeters. - 1–3 mm: Healthy gums - 4–5 mm: Early signs of gum inflammation or mild gum disease - 6 mm or more: Deeper pockets that may need treatment such as scaling and root planing. These numbers help us track gum health and catch problems early before they progress.
What Is Scaling and Root Planing, and What Should I Expect?
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure used to treat gum disease. It removes plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline to help gums heal and tighten around the teeth. You’ll be numb and comfortable during treatment, and mild soreness afterward is normal for a day or two. Good home care and regular cleanings help maintain the results.
What Is an Oral Cancer Screening?
During every dental exam, we perform an oral cancer screening as part of your routine care. We check the lips, tongue, cheeks, and other soft tissues for any unusual changes, sores, or lumps. Most findings are harmless, but early detection is key—regular screenings help keep you safe and healthy.
