National Children’s Dental Health Month
Teaching Healthy Smiles Starts in Our Community
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene habits for kids, and at Rozanski Family Dentistry, it’s also a time to give back to the community in a meaningful, hands-on way.
For the fifth year in a row, Dr. Rozanski is proud to visit Hughes Elementary School’s kindergarten classes each February, continuing a tradition that blends education, fun, and community connection. These annual visits are more than a presentation; they’re part of a long-term commitment to helping children understand how caring for their teeth today leads to healthier smiles for life.
Bringing Dental Health to Life in the Classroom
During each visit, Dr. Rozanski spends time with students, often combining two classes. The sessions are designed to be engaging, age-appropriate, and interactive. One of the highlights is reading The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to the Dentist, a favorite story that helps children feel more comfortable with dental visits and understand what to expect at the dentist.
From there, the learning really comes alive. Using a friendly dragon puppet with a giant toothbrush, colorful poster boards, and hands-on demonstrations, Dr. Rozanski teaches kids:
- How brushing fights cavities
- What healthy teeth and gums look like
- Why brushing twice a day is important
- The difference between everyday healthy foods and treats we should enjoy “sometimes”
“We want kids to see the dentist as a friendly helper, not something to be afraid of,” says Dr. Rozanski. “If we can make dental care fun and familiar early on, it sets them up for a lifetime of healthier habits.”
Encouraging Curiosity Through Questions and Conversation
Each classroom visit includes a lively Q&A session, where students ask thoughtful questions about teeth, brushing, and dental tools. By February, teachers note that students are especially ready to listen and participate, making the sessions even more effective.
Looking ahead, Dr. Rozanski hopes to enhance these visits by collecting questions from parents and students in advance, allowing him to tailor discussions even more closely to what kids and families want to know. This approach helps strengthen the connection between school, home, and dental health education.
“Kids are naturally curious,” Dr. Rozanski explains. “When we answer their questions directly, they feel empowered, and that confidence carries over into how they take care of their teeth.”
Leaving a Lasting Impression Beyond the Visit
Before heading back to the office, Dr. Rozanski makes sure every child leaves with a branded dental health goodie bag, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, fun stickers, etc. These take-home items reinforce the lessons learned in class while also keeping oral health top of mind for families.
These thoughtful “leave-behinds” help extend the impact of each visit, spark conversations at home, and strengthen Rozanski Family Dentistry’s presence as a trusted local practice.
Community Engagement with a Long-Term Vision
School outreach plays an important role in maintaining a balanced, family-friendly practice at Rozanski Family Dentistry. While expanding to additional schools is limited by existing providers and travel considerations, the Hughes Elementary visits remain a cornerstone of Dr. Rozanski’s community engagement strategy.
“Education is one of the best ways we can serve our community,” says Dr. Rozanski. “When kids recognize you from their classroom, it builds trust, for them and their parents.”
As National Children’s Dental Health Month reminds us, healthy smiles start with knowledge, encouragement, and a little fun. At Rozanski Family Dentistry, February is about more than teeth, it’s about investing in the next generation, one smile at a time.
