National Toothbrush Day: Finding the Right Brush for Your Smile
June 26th is National Toothbrush Day, the perfect reminder that one small daily habit can make a big difference for your smile, your health, and your confidence.
June is packed with reasons to celebrate healthy smiles. It’s recognized as both National Oral Health Month and Dental Diversity Month, and right in the middle of it all is a fun reminder we can all appreciate: National Toothbrush Day on June 26th.
At Rozanski Family Dentistry, we know toothbrushes may seem simple, but they play one of the biggest roles in protecting your teeth and gums every single day. Whether you prefer a classic manual toothbrush or the latest electronic model, the most important thing is finding what works best for you.
“Tooth brushing is a very individualized thing,” says Dr. Rozanski. “The best toothbrush is the one that allows you to clean effectively and comfortably every day.”
So… manual or electronic?
The answer may surprise you: both can work very well.
For many patients, a manual toothbrush does the job perfectly fine, as long as they have good brushing technique and enough dexterity to clean thoroughly around every tooth. A soft-bristle toothbrush is always recommended because harder bristles can cause unnecessary wear on teeth and trauma to the gums over time.
“If you’re using a manual toothbrush, make sure you can brush well and reach all areas effectively,” says Dr. Rozanski. “You don’t want to scrub aggressively. Gentle and thorough is always better.”
Electronic toothbrushes, however, have become increasingly popular for a reason. Brands like Oral-B and Philips Sonicare offer built-in timers, pressure sensors, and rotating or vibrating brush heads that can help improve brushing consistency. Electronic toothbrushes can be especially helpful during retirement years or anytime dexterity becomes more challenging.
“As we get older, hand strength and dexterity can naturally decrease,” says Dr. Rozanski. “That’s when I often start recommending electronic toothbrushes because they can make brushing easier and more effective.”
One of the most common questions dental professionals hear is: How often should I replace my toothbrush? The general rule is every three months. That goes for both manual toothbrushes and electronic toothbrush heads. If the bristles start looking frayed sooner than that, it’s time for a replacement even earlier. Worn-out bristles simply don’t clean as effectively.
And here’s a bonus tip: if you’ve recently been sick, it’s a smart idea to replace your toothbrush afterward as well.
Of course, having the right toothbrush is only part of the equation. Brushing twice a day for two full minutes, flossing daily, and keeping up with regular dental visits are what truly help maintain a healthy smile long term.
At Rozanski Family Dentistry, encouraging healthy habits is something the team genuinely enjoys, especially when it comes to younger patients learning the importance of oral care.
“Yes, we absolutely give away toothbrushes and toothpaste when a patient comes in for their appointment,” says Dr. Rozanski with a smile. “We love helping patients leave the office feeling motivated and equipped to take care of their teeth at home.”
National Toothbrush Day may not come with fireworks or big celebrations, but it’s a great reminder that healthy smiles are built through small daily routines. The toothbrush sitting on your bathroom counter may not seem exciting, but it’s one of the most important tools you use every day.
So this June 26th, take a quick look at your toothbrush. If it’s overdue for replacement, swap it out. If your brushing routine could use improvement, ask questions at your next dental visit. And if you’re unsure whether a manual or electronic toothbrush is best for you, the team at Rozanski Family Dentistry is always happy to help guide you toward the healthiest smile possible.
After all, every great smile starts with the basics…one brush stroke at a time.
